Evening Matura: A Study in Self-Exploitation – The Case of Franz Innerhofer By Peter Siegfried Krug (2026) Series: Trauma and Institutional Upbringing

In our society, social advancement through education is often transfigured into a heroic success story: "From farmhand to bestselling author." Yet, behind the glittering facade of Franz Innerhofer’s biography lies a dark truth: total self-exploitation.

In my latest paper, I examine the murderous exhaustion Innerhofer practiced during his time at the "Abendmatura" (evening high school). It was not a path to freedom, but rather the transformation of external violence (by the father) into an internal violence against himself. He became his own relentless farmhand.

Core Points of the Analysis:

  • The Body Armor (Körper-Panzer): How traumatic childhood experiences lead to a permanent physical rigidity that makes genuine recovery impossible.

  • Habitus-Lag & John Henryism: Why those ascending the social ladder pay a double price and often arrive at their destination "burnt out."

  • The Ascent Lie: Why education alone does not heal trauma, but often merely refines the means of self-harm.

A Personal Contrast I contrast this tragedy with my own biography. My path also led from institutional care (Itzling children's home) to the Christian Doppler Gymnasium. However, at the point where the stress became life-threatening—marked by severe sleep disorders and tinnitus—I made a decision that remained closed to Innerhofer:

I pulled the emergency brake.

This paper is a documentation of the value of self-preservation and a warning against a system that places achievement above human life.

About the Author: Peter Siegfried Krug (born 1966 in Salzburg) is a documentarian of institutional history and the psychosomatic consequences of oppression. He is a FIDE Master for Chess Composition (2017) and critically engages with the Austrian culture of social advancement.
